In Chicago, Food, Life

The Taste of Randolph street festival, located in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, takes place in one week. With over 20 restaurants attending, there are plenty of tasty options for everyone. That being said, make sure not to miss out on my top four list. A word to the wise: some restaurants will only have a limited amount of menu items available, so be strategic when making your Taste plan.

My Top Eats

 Publican Quality Meats

Publican Quality Meats is located in Chicago’s meatpacking district, and fittingly so, Publican is known for their meat-centric menu that includes favorites like Cocido, which is a mix of smoked chorizo, braised beef, blood sausage, chickpeas, potatoes, carrots, and mojo picon (a spicy garlic sauce). Also extremely popular is “The Return of the Gyro,” Publican’s version of a Greek lamb gyro, that instead of lamb is made using braised pork belly, pea shoots and calabrian chili vinaigrette. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, Publican is probably not the stop for you, but if you’re a carnivore, eat up!

Cone Gourmet Ice Cream

Sean McGuire, originally from Ireland, opened Cone Gourmet Ice Cream in 2013. The quaint ice cream shop, located in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, is close to the United Center, which is perfect for pre- and post-game or concert ice cream eaters. Cone favorites include “The Shamrock” (soft serve ice cream covered with Lucky Charms) and “the Hair of the Dog” sundae (Guinness, Baileys, and Jameson ice cream topped with chocolate syrup, homemade whipped cream and chocolate flakes). Cone is also known for their unique flavors like Butterfinger, maple bacon and cookie monster. On average, the weather is in the 80’s on this particular weekend of June, so it’s the perfect time to enjoy a cold treat.

¡Hello Tacos!

¡Hello Tacos! has one of the most extensive taco menus in the city with over 18 taco options, tamales, tortas (Mexican style sandwiches served on toasted rolls) and Mexican inspired cocktails and margaritas to boot. Highlights on the ¡Hello Tacos! menu include: the battered catfish taco with jalapeno jicama honey slaw and chipotle mayo; the spicy turkey meatball torta with turkey meatballs, guajillo-arbol “marinara,” Chihuahua cheese and cilantro; and the ginger cucumber lemon margarita, which is perfect for quenching your thirst on a hot summer day.

If you haven’t tried Asian barbeque, now is the time! BellyQ’s Asian inspired menu is as creative as it is delicious. The restaurant is located off the Ashland green line near Union Park. Favorites here include: the brisket buns filled with braised beef, peppers and onion; the vegetable hot pot (perfect for the vegetarian or vegan eater) with soft tofu, rice cakes, cumin, and miso; and the Vietnamese cinnamon donuts served with tasty and colorful berry compote.
